The climate change department will host discussions in Canberra this Friday on its plans to establish a scheme backed by legislation that will allow carbon offset businesses to trade internationally and sell to Australian companies that are seeking to become CO2 neutral.

Companies seeking to purchase credits to offset their carbon emissions could soon have more certainty, after Climate Change Minister Greg Combet took the first step towards resuscitating a domestic offsets market, in the wake of the demise of the Greenhouse Friendly scheme and in the lead-up to its proposed Carbon Farming Initiative.

Chevron Australia won't invest in offsetting any of the carbon dioxide emissions from its massive Wheatstone LNG project that will boost Western Australia's greenhouse gas emissions by more than 13%, its environmental impact statement reveals.

Victoria will develop its own accreditation standard for carbon offsets and there are key differences between the State's proposal to buy abatement from the brown coal-fired power sector and the Coalition's 'direct action' plan, the State's Environment Minister Gavin Jennings tells CE Daily.
