Australia's environment ministers today agreed to develop a national clean air plan and flagged the release in November of a consultation regulatory impact statement on packaging waste.

Cargill Processing Ltd has given an enforceable undertaking to EPA Victoria to spend about $600,000 fixing odour problems, while the Authority has issued five pollution notices to Amcor Packaging in the wake of 'skyrocketing' odour complaints.

A WA composting facility that diverts thousands of tonnes of waste from landfill and has spent more than $2.4 million in the last two years to address odour problems, has lost its appeal against licence amendments that require it to ensure odours don't 'interfere' with anyone off-site.

Australia's environment ministers have today agreed on a plan to harmonise environmental regulation and to give high priority to completing product stewardship framework legislation, but progress is too slow for NSW environment minister Frank Sartor.

A planned ministerial review to harmonise environmental regulation must reduce the reporting burden on business and limit public access to confidential data, says an Australian Sustainable Business Group submission.
