Victoria's planning tribunal has overturned a council decision to grant permits for six homes on coastal land partly because of the risk of climate change-induced rising sea levels.
The Victorian government has convened an industry working group to ensure Latrobe Valley cleaner coal projects can minimise the costs of carbon capture and storage by sharing the use of CO2 pipelines and injection infrastructure.
Any compensation given to coal-fired generators could come with enforceable strings attached, says Richard Bolt, head of Victoria' department responsible for energy.
Bolt also put the case for re-framing the debate on subsidising small-scale solar PV.
Victorian Premier John Brumby this morning announced a $110 million fund for large-scale carbon capture and storage demonstration projects, and a further $5.2 million to investigate potential carbon storage sites in the Gippsland basin.
The premier also committed $12.2 million for a new body – called Clean Coal Victoria – to identify future coal resources in under-explored areas.
