You will have a small team to lead as well as coaching from senior business unit leaders, and we encourage people-centric, strategic environment managers who possess personal drive to apply.

Environmental management experience in construction, extractive/mining or manufacturing is essential.

Your responsibilities and opportunities to succeed will include:

  • assisting in the development, delivery and review of the National HSE Strategy and Product Line Action plans.
  • educating directors and officers in their due diligence duties.
  • implementing the HSEQ Management System in collaboration with the Central HSE team.
  • ensuring assurance audits are completed in line with the Audit and Assurance Program and corrective actions are tracked effectively and closed out in a timely manner.
  • providing information as required to the Central HSE team to meet reporting obligations.
  • developing effective relationships with key environmental regulator representatives.
  • maintaining industry association links to stay abreast of environmental and sustainability risks.
  • reporting, investigating and managing environmental incidents and complaints.

  • Statutory development: The government has introduced the Protection of the Sea (Prevention of Pollution from Ships) Amendment (Air Pollution) Bill.

  • The Clean Energy Regulator has approved the first ERF project that will earn credits using the ERF industrial equipment upgrades method (see background here).

  • The Senate environment committee will conduct a lengthy inquiry into a Greens-proposed Bill on product stewardship, which will focus packaging and plastic (see background here).
  • The Clean Energy Regulator has released information on the performance of the Emissions Reduction Fund in August.
  • After the federal government conceded a previous EPBC assessment was inadequate, Adani has again made an EPBC referral for water infrastructure for its Carmichael coal mine.
  • Neoen Australia has submitted an EPBC referral for its 900MW Kentbruck wind farm and 500MW/1,000MWh hours battery storage facility in south-west Victoria.
  • InfraBuild, formerly Liberty OneSteel, has submitted an application for a hazardous waste permit to export up to 30,000 tonnes of zinc-containing electric arc furnace dust to South Korea for reclamation.

  • The House of Representatives standing committee inquiring into nuclear energy is conducting a hearing in Canberra today and has released transcript of its August 29 hearing.
  • New resource: The NZ government today released a new framework for assessing climate change risks.

Queensland:

  • Statutory development: Parliamentary debate is under way this week on the Environmental Protection (Great Barrier Reef Protection Measures) And Other Legislation Amendment Bill, which aims to improve water quality entering the Reef.
  • Grant opportunity – last chance!: Applications for recycling infrastructure grants of between $50,000 and $5 million will be accepted until September 22, under round two of the Resource Recovery Industry Development Program.
  • Have your say!: Comment closes October 25 on a draft Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander commercial fishing development policy.

NSW:

  • The Independent Planning Commission has refused consent for a coal mine and rejected claims by the Department of Planning, Industry and Environment that NSW's climate policy was an irrelevant consideration (see background here).
  • Statutory development: The NSW government is conducting a statutory review of the Marine Pollution Act 2012. Comment closes October 16.
  • The Department of Planning, Industry and Environment is proposing changes to the Biodiversity Assessment Method. Comment closes on October 16.
  • The EPA has released a waste management toolkit on the tender, contract and project management phases of construction projects.
  • The EPA has also released an owner's guide to the lawful disposal of construction waste.
  • Have your say!: IPART, which regulates water and energy utilities, has released issues papers on prices charged by Sydney Water and Hunter Water. Comments on discussion papers are due by October 21.

ACT:

  • The ACT government has released a new climate change strategy for 2019 to 2025 to reach net zero by 2045 (see background here).

Victoria:

  • Have your say!: Comment closes November 10 on the EPA's draft charter of consultation.
  • The state's Planning Minister will decide whether to grant consent for any solar farm or battery with a capacity of at least 1MW, under a new planning amendment (see background here).
  • The EPA has released the report of a contaminated sites audit of the Hazelwood power station site.
  • Recovered Energy Australia Pty Ltd, the proponents of a waste to energy project proposed for Laverton North, have until tomorrow to provide a response to an EPA request for further information.
  • Have your say!: Comment closes October 31 on a regulations, standards and protocols that will support the state's new environmental law, due to take effect in mid-2020 (see background here).
  • Have your say!: A total of five renewable energy roadmaps are now open for consultation.

Tasmania:

South Australia:

Western Australia:

  • The air pollution condition applying to Yara Pilbara's ammonium nitrate plant on the Burrup Peninsula should be updated and tightened, the EPA has recommended (see background here).
  • Grant opportunity: Applications are due by October 30 for a share of $9 million in renewable hydrogen grants on offer from the state government. A further $1 million will fund work by the government's Renewable Hydrogen Unit.
  • Western Australia's appeals convenor has rejected an appeal against a Department of Water and Environmental Regulation decision to allow a landfill to accept PFAS waste (see background here).
