EPA Victoria fines composter for breaching notice

EPA Victoria has fined Australian Native Landscapes Pty Ltd for breaching a pollution abatement notice, in the latest twist to long-running efforts to resolve residents' complaints about odour.

The penalty follows an October 1 audit of its Coldstream composting facility which found the company had failed to meet record-keeping obligations about its activities on the site.

"The records, which include details of turning and movement of compost piles, are required so ANL can appropriately manage its processes and eliminate any odour impact on the community," an EPA statement said.

"EPA must have access to the data to assess compliance and help identify odour-causing activities."

ANL had previously agreed to remove about 28,000 cubic metres of highly odorous compost from the site as part of efforts to resolve the odour problems.
