Major dairy company says emission cuts of 25% or more possible by 2020

Murray Goulburn Co-Op can cut its 2020 non-farm greenhouse gas emissions by "at least" 25% using a three-part approach, the company's sustainability manager Patten Bridge said today.

"We see it as entirely possible," Bridge told a climate and business conference in Sydney.

Patten said the company had identified three key strategies.

"Firstly, we can generate an 11% emissions reduction by reconfiguring our [coal briquette-fired] boilers to run off natural gas ... and converting our transport fleet to run off LNG rather than diesel," he said.

"We've already converted a third of our fleet to LNG."

Secondly, the company estimates it can achieve a 5% reduction by ensuring pumps, motors and other equipment is operating efficiently and by more effectively utilising hot and cold processes in its factories.

This second set of measures "will produce savings based on a four-year payback with no carbon price", he said.

Thirdly, the company anticipates "at least a 10% reduction" by reducing its reliance on electricity from the grid.

As well as implementing cogeneration, that could entail "changing our wastewater treatment plants from aerobic to anaerobic and utilising the resulting biogas for electricity generation", he said.

"We've recently completed a biogas project at our Leongatha facility which is now producing 10% of the site energy requirements and has reduced the emissions profile by 25%," he said.

"This is all on a two-and-a-half year payback for a $1.8 million project," he said.

Bridge was speaking at a conference session where panellists were asked to comment on a 25% emissions reduction scenario.

He told CE Daily the company was still formulating its emissions reduction target, adding that there were a "number of hurdles" to overcome to implement some of the measures.
